About Hanok

Hanok, which refers to Korean traditional house is a very peculiar and unique heritage of Korean culture and history. It gives us some picture on how Korean people live in the past as well as the ancestor wisdom on building the house without any help from technology or modern concept.

A we know, there is no such things called air-con and heater a decade or even few decade ago.How the ancient people could live happily in four seasons and prevent themselves from natural disaster such as earthquake?

Now,I gonna to introduce some unique concept of Hanok,

First is baesannimsu,a traditional belief of ideal location of house which face the river with the mountain at the back of the house.Mostly, the hanok faced south because it is believed to be warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Second is their heating system during winter. They are using underground heated rock system to warm up a house during winter. In Korean traditional architecture, is underfloor heating which uses direct heat transfer from wood smoke to the underside of a thick masonry floor.

Third is their ventilation system during summer. As we see in the pictures below, most of the hanok are equipped with wide and big open floor or living room for good ventilation during hot summer. Here is also where all the family are gathered together.

Besides, the red mud(hwangto)wall, roof and floors is the main contributor to the heating, cooling and purifying effect in the hanok.

Fourth is the shape of the hanok based on the region.
Generally, the northern part of Korea which is cooler than other region tends to have 口 shape hanok to block wind flow while central region mostly build in L shape.Last but not least, the southern part of Korea, which is consider warmest among all mostly are in I shape.

Here is the example for L shape Hanok.
Erm...I just want to clarify that the shape is not necessarily to mean the shape of the house but the shape of overall floor plan of the house.

Hanok is not a unit of house, but is a combination of several building which is huddled together around a square courtyard.

In order to prevent the damage of earthquake, or 'Daedulbo' are not inserted into the ground, but are fitted into the cornerstones to keep Hanok safe from earthquakes.

Here is some great sites to introduce Hanok in Seoul area

Well, pictures definitely couldn't speak thousand words on Hanok but what is the best words you will give for Hanok?

Our little toy:Choe Jangnangam

Yesterday,we was burst into big laugh when we heard Muggie seongsaenim complained how sasa slapped him without any reason and said "mianhaeyo"for n times. He was like "huh?"(big rolling eyes)for 30 seconds after being slapped.

(⊙o⊙)?

Well,I really don't know what's going on between them.I think sasa just slapped him out of randomness. They usually fight and run over to Peggy or me and said "Hey,you saw that.....?"

Usually,we just react in this way....
╭(╯^╰)╮ or this way  ╮(╯_╰)╭

Muggie was so fed up and said"Okay, finally I know I am just a toy for everyone, call me Choe Jangnangam(toy) from now on,yeah?I change my name now because of SASA!"

Oh my gosh.such a cute jangnangam.
Anyone want it?

SUPPLI and me

Annyeonghaseyo~ I’m Sasa from Suppli Language Solution! It’s fortunate to stay in Suppli, Haha. Why I say so? Actually, I’m still studying in college; I come over to Suppli after I finish my class. Hmm, usually I work until 9 or 10 pm and the worst thing is tomorrow’s class is 8 am!!! What in the world!! A lot of people ask me, why I want to make myself so exhausting and tiring? Well, because I like what I’m doing right now, nope, is love! Not because of money, is some kind of contentment I think. Haha..

It's not easy to study and work at the same time. That’s why my eyes bag getting worst; I daydream in class most of the time. Competition, cheerleading, violin, Suppli , Assignment, presentation… why don’t you resign since that you’re so busy all the time? Well, I had never ever think about that no matter now or future, never, ever! For me, Suppli is not a workplace, it’s a place which, hmmm.. Hard to explain, but it brings special meaning for me. Felt connected, emotionally connected, seriously.

Hostel guard and my roommate feel pity and sympathy when they saw me back from work at the late night. Take shower at 11pm while other people are enjoying their Korean drama at hostel. So what? As long as I feel happy! J

Incredible huh? Darling, don’t ask that kind of question again. Because of love, that’s why I keep it on~

Kids Holiday Mandarin Intensive Class and WDWDT (What Do We Do There)???

I wonder at times, do we adults, still sometimes remember what do we dream of or wanted to be as a child?
Does the flashes of dreams and hopes and passions accumulate into a permanent residue inside of us, and make us live big or does it all remains in our subconsciousness and only occasionally visit us in our deep sleep.

But as time goes by, i have learn to stop wondering and start living. From these children, i have learn to love this life in its form of simplicity, which is 'Live, Laugh, Love, Learn"!

As i was looking at these kids, seeing them attending classes even when it was the first week of their school holiday,  i was reflecting back when i was at their age, during school holiday what would i had loved to do? The instant and immediate answer would be to PLAY PLAY AND PLAY! Looking for FUN FUN AND MORE FUN!

And thus an idea started forming in my head..."Let us make this class a big playground, where learning is not just sitting down, reading, writing, listening and BORE-ing..."

We started doing role-play together and during the topic of occupations, i had assigned each of them a classroom by themselves acting as if it were their own office.
Children's creativity has no bound, just within a fleeting moment, there were already out of their class, shouting and running in the center's hall. Two of the kids were acting out as police and bandit, real life thief catching show, leaving me highly amused.

"Hey, when i had provided an unmovable classroom, you guys gave me a moving chasing show. What if i had provided you guys with a gold mining field, would you Children give me more than mere a universe? :)"

Kids are where our future happens, cherish them, appreciates them, and dig into your own heart and starting to live life like they do. Let us all Be Alive and Stay Alive :)

Food for thought on a class feast

It was a Saturday like any normal Saturday, yet there was something in the air that indicates a happening of special occasions, a memorable event, and even a  feast. It was the smell of food. Western food traditional food all hand-made by one of our student Saiful, serunding, ketupat, spaghetti... you name them and we had had them.

The amazement of having a guy cooked us all these (and the taste is Superb with a big S) is totally unspeakable for a girl like me who can't even fry a sunny side up egg without making a big mess in kitchen, yet what touches me deep inside beyond the taste bud on my tongue was, his heart.

A heart of sharing and spreading kindness, and his wiling-ness to prepare his amazing delicious saliva-leaking food for his fellow classmates, Korean teacher, and staff in Suppli Language Solution, bringing food all the way from his house and sharing it with us in Suppli. It was beautifully amazing.

That is when i realize as if lightning of enlightenment strike me on my head that, a classroom with teacher and students could be so much more, so much more than what our human eyes can see. A classroom with teacher and student could actually evolve into a family-kind of tight bonding-ship. I like it, more than a kind of learning experience, in Suppli it has transcended into relationship-bond that can last a lifetime and more.

Lovely gift

Today,I received some lovely gift from Atiqah (for Korean trip) and Nadiah(for Cameron Highland trip). They are both from Korean class and Mandarin class of SUPPLI.It is really surprised me because they are not my students and I am just the one who talking with them and managing their class schedule and report to them.It is really touching to feel someone remember you while they went to travel.

Well, sad to say,I rarely received gift even from my family since 12 ,I guess. Moreover,my only family(my mum)was passed away when I was 18.That's why I really precious every gift I've received from my best friends or even students(or not my students)at SUPPLI.

I do believe the gift from someone always comes with blessing and hope.Whatever it appears,it means something to the receiver.

Thanks so much again for priceless gift and memory.

(ps:I was told by someone that I am resemble to the sun flower and coincidentally I've got the sunflower angel handmade clay pen from Nadiah=)The power of attraction,I guess?)

Our first testimonial=)

Getting a testimonial from students is kinda daunting tasks because it sounds so weird when we asked "Would you mind to write something about our class?"or whatever u could think to ask someone to comment about you. After all, giving comment or any advise about the service you provided is not something compulsory or necessary for a customers.

However, thanks to the kindness and generosity of our Mandarin class's students,we've got our first testimonial!

We will strive hard and try our very best to get much more satisfaction and positive comments from our students(our main priority)

Wish them have a happy and fruitful class with us!

Once again, thank you so much and cheers!

Seongsanim Birthday Surprise

Late post:(31st October 2013)
Today,we celebrated our seongsaenim,Muggie birthday in advance (November 5th).
We gave him big surprise by switched off the light and bringing in our cake to him.

We planned everything out in very very last minutes whereas everyone knows his birthday when they reached SUPPLI.Pei Voon,Sasa and Izzati even went to buy the cake with barely 10 mins before the class. However, they still managed to get in the class on time with calm face.

It is really touching to see how students worked together to give their seongsaenim surprise.

That's why we precious bond and relation between seongsaenim and all classmates who share a same goal and same LOVE in KOREAN LANGUAGE .Learning is not a goal;it is a process instead.

Start your journey and overwrite it with FUN#HAPPY#LOVE#KOREAN#LANGUAGE#
